Day 1 – Penguins and land-based adventure

Depart Cape Town in the morning and follow a scenic coastal route to Betty’s Bay. Along the way, arrive at a protected African penguin colony and observe the penguins in their natural habitat. From here, the journey continues into the Overberg region, where rolling landscapes lead you toward the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley for a relaxed lunch.

Stretching inland from the coast, the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley is shaped by cool sea air and misty mornings. Vineyards unfold beneath dramatic mountain backdrops, creating ideal conditions for cool-climate wines. After lunch at one of the wine estates, travel through Hermanus before following the coastline onward to De Kelders.

As the pace slows, arrive in De Kelders, a quiet and understated village overlooking the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Here, the atmosphere feels peaceful and deeply connected to nature. From June to November, this coastline offers some of South Africa’s finest land-based whale watching. More peaceful than nearby Hermanus, De Kelders allows for a more intimate and less distracted wildlife experience. Check in to your 4-star accommodation and enjoy uninterrupted ocean views.

Later in the afternoon, choose how active you’d like the day to be. Optional activities include guided sunset fat bike tour along coastal dunes and clifftop trails, with sweeping views across the bay. The ride suits a range of skill and comfort levels. Alternatively, opt for a slower pace with an additional wine tasting at a leading local estate. Another option is a relaxed beach walk, paired with exploration of the limestone cliffs and ancient caves once used by Stone Age hunter-gatherers. Please note that some activities like the fat biking need to be booked in advance.

As evening approaches, dine at one of the best local restaurants in the De Kelders area. Enjoy fresh seafood and regional specialities while the sounds of the ocean set the tone for the night (for own account).

Day 2 – Gansbaai Whale Watching Cruise & Hermanus

Wake to crisp sea air and, during peak season, the chance to spot southern right whales directly from your balcony or along the rocks below. In these sheltered waters, whales often calve close to shore. You may even hear the sound of their blowholes and watch them surface as early light glimmers off their backs.

Enjoy a leisurly breakfast before travelling to Gansbaai for a whale-watching cruise. These tours are operated by a licensed, safety-approved companies, offering unforgettable close-up encounters. Please note that this is a shared experience with other guests. The cruise is led by an experienced marine biologist, who provides insight into the Walker Bay ecosystem. You may encounter the Marine Big 5, along with a variety of pelagic birdlife.

Following the cruise, continue to Hermanus for a seaside lunch on the cliffs (for own account). Afterwards, enjoy a guided walk along the famous Hermanus cliff path, renowned for its exceptional land based whale viewing. Finally, return to Cape Town via the scenic Clarence Drive coastal route, arriving in the early evening.
